~Filtering of Light~

As Kobe is a city surrounded by both the ocean and mountains, we would like to embody this duality in the construction of the Dyre 108 building. With this in mind, we are using as many natural and recycled materials as possible throughout the structure:
*The exterior will consist of a mortar that is a mixture of earth and paste, while the outer borders of the land (one meter setback) will be set in big stones salvaged from the old Japanese koi pond on the property.
*The main entrance will feature a memorial garden using one big momiji (maple) tree from the old housesite (as well as many other old trees and stones placed in and around the building) to symbolize the essence and beauty of nature that is often lacking in the development of new building projects, especially in the city.

*The inside stairwell will be exemplify the ocean aspect with a striking shell mosaic installation also saved from the old housesite.
*Throughout the building natural sunlight will filter though the many skylights and open areas for the very purpose of providing solar light over artificial light thus cutting back on the use of man-made energy.

As a landmark of eco-friendliness in the heart of Kobe, our hope is to start a trend in the future construction of other buildings in Kobe City.

Brief History
During WWII, Ben Dyre was stationed in China serving in the US Air Force. In the aftermath of the war he left China, only having enough money to get as far as Japan. After spending one year in Tokyo, he resolved to start up an import-export business and headed for the port city of Kobe to set up shop. In 1960, he purchased the 351 square meter lot in Downtown Kobe, known as Kyoryuchi, in the Old Kobe Foreign Settlement Area, out of which he ran his trading businesses, Deer Island Industries, Ltd. & Ameriport, Inc.
In the last decade or so, the area has become home to a new, up and coming area, rapidly becoming populated with high profile and designer stores. Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Miu Miu, Prada, Gucci, as well as the Daimaru department store chain, and a number of design conscious coffee shops and boutiques have opened in the area. This lot is located on the same street that Luminarie takes place on each year at Christmastime. This is the annual light festival that is held in memory of the disastrous 1995 Hanshin Earthquake, which begins at Daimaru and spans the length of 5 blocks all the way to Higashi Park. As the place is very sentimental to our family, with its many memories and rich history, it is our hope to build in a manner that is highly meaningful and significant, especially amidst the saturation of corporate-commercial brand names. Since it is commercially zoned, the first and second floors must be of a commercial nature, while setting it apart from the rest of the neighborhood by focusing on a unique design concept.
